    UTI treatment questions..?

My Dr. put me on antibiotics for a UTI, but I've been reading the internet that Cranberry is very good at aiding/preventing treatments for UTIS. I read that Cranberry Juice is so high in sugar that I should try an unsweetened Craberry concentrate. Is this different then Cranberry tablets? Where can I buy the Tree of Life or Hain's brand?? Can I get these at any local health food or vitamin shop??
  • Joe replied on Mon, 10 Aug, 2009
Antibiotics are by far the most effective treatment for a UTI. I'd bet he put you on Bactrim (trimethoprim and sulfamethoxazole) or a related sulfa drug. These types of antibiotics make almost any UTI. Cranberry juice is also thought to be an effective treatment, however it often takes longer periods of time and the results are inconsistent. My advice to you is to take the antibiotic.

Yes, cranberry juice cocktails are very high in sugar. Yes, typically you can find good quality cranberry concentrate tablets at any local health food store or the Vitamin Shoppe. Yes, cranberry (not the juice cocktails) is very helpful in the prevention and treatment of UTIs. This is a recipe for a cranberry drink you can make at home that is fabulous not only for your urinary tract health, but also for your liver, which can become stressed just by eating "conventional foods" (i.e., non organic foods), and many other things other than chronic alcohol use. I mention this because many people think that their livers are healthy if they don't abuse alcohol, yet most Americans have some degree of liver stress. 2 oz UNSWEETENED Cranberry Juice (not cranberry cocktail juice blend – that has too much sugar in it and won’t work. I like the Just Cranberry Brand) ¼ - ½ tsp raw, unfiltered apple cider vinegar (After a week, you will stop tasting the vinegar. Add ¼ tsp each time you stop tasting the vinegar in the drink) 1-2 TBSP lemon juice 6-8 oz of filtered or spring water (I use sparkling water, makes it seem like soda) I mix enough for the day in the morning and drink it 3 times per day, as do most of my patients. Also amazing for preventing and treating UTI is a supplement called D-Mannose. It comes in capsule form, both with and without cranberry. Either way it works really well. D-Mannose is a wood sugar, that is biologically inactive in humans. We do not digest wood sugar, it will not affect our blood sugar in any way. It is processed out of the body through the kidneys and urinary tract. Microbes of all kinds LOVE wood sugar, will "jump on it" to eat it, and this flushes the microbes out of the body with the urine. D-Mannose is completely safe, no side-effects, works like a charm without damaging your intestinal or vaginal flora or compromising your immune function the way anti-biotics can and often do. I suffered from a chronic "incurable" bladder disease for over 25 years (my bladder now functions normally and without pain), so I made a point of having my education include every known natural method for treating bladder/urinary tract problems, and it is now one of my practice specialties. Good luck! Respectfully, Dr. Kim
